Product Description

Basel: Ioannis Oporini, 1546. The first Latin translation of the Sibylline Oracles edited and translated by French scholar Sebastian Chatillon. The Oracles were an amalgam of prophecies taken from various pagan and Judeo-Christian sources and were held in high esteem by the early Church Fathers. Their general vision is apocalyptic and describes the calamities that are to come upon the world and the various nations in the future. They were an inspiration for various works of art and literature, especially in the Renaissance. At the end of the work are a few short passages from Virgil's Eclogues and Johannes Vives' Scholion. Small 8vo, [xx] + 135pp. Lacking blank leaf (B4). Large wood-cut capitals. Light marginal damp-staining, small wormhole. Bound in 18th century sprinkled calf with morocco label on spine, raised bands, rubbing to joints. [Adams S 1060; Hieronymus, Griech. Geist 461; Schweiger I, 288.]
